About Envenomated
While vacationing in a remote area of Jalisco Mexico, I was stung by a particularly poisonous species of scorpion. As I sat on the steps of the pharmacia, waiting for the doctor to arrive, I began to withdraw from my surroundings and entered a world of my own. I felt like I had eaten some questionable street food, along with some equally questionable acid, about an hour earlier. After being administered three vials of anti-venom by the clinics doctor, I began to feel like I might not go into shock and believed I would survive. As I walked back, floating a few inches off the ground, I could enjoy my altered state amidst the tropical world around me.
To depict this queasy, tingling, and psychedelic place, I photographed, at a very close distance, thick pieces of plexiglass with paint applied to both sides. I thought that abstract photographs with a sense of depth could reflect the floating sensation I experienced. These images illustrate things that I felt and some things that I actually saw, while suggesting the background of sun, mountains, ocean, and jungle.
